The first eight days of this event are dedicated to flower decoration. Every house makes an idol of Lord Vishnu on the ninth day of the festival.

The women of the family dance around it and applaud. Thappatikali is the name of this type of dance. At night, Ganesha and Shravan idols are built, and the idols are immersed after the evening ritual.

In Onam, the boat race is the most well-known event. This is the most important aspect of it. Vallamukali is the name of the race. In this race, there are huge longboats and 20 to 40 persons that run them.

In every household, Vallasan, a particular meal of the celebration, is prepared. On this day, bananas are steamed in the morning and enjoyed with breakfast.

"Nemdrum" is the name of this breakfast. Only in Kerala can you get this sort of banana. Good foods are cooked for this celebration as well, just like for other festivals.

It is a tourist festival, which is why the Kerala government celebrates this holiday. As a result of this, a visual impression of Kerala's cultural legacy is created.

At Onam, Kerala comes alive with boat races, dance, music, banquets, and other festivities. This festival symbolizes the joyful embrace of the beauty of the life of Keralites. One of the most colorful celebrations in India, this festival is held every year in the month of September.
