German Unity Day on 3 October commemorates the merger of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic into a united federal Germany in 1990. The day is a public holiday celebrated with music, community meals, political speeches, and fireworks.

History of German Unity Day:

In the aftermath of WWII, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union controlled Germany in four military areas. The Federal Republic of Germany was established in 1949 and the German Democratic Republic was formed on October 7 of that same year, also known as the German Democratic Republic.

In post-war Europe, political tensions did not allow for a great deal of connection between citizens in both countries. The DDR has fought strongly against its political adversaries' repression. The German police have kept thousands of people under observation.

The citizens of Leipzig held a peaceful demonstration against the DDR administration on 4 September 1989. In other DDR cities, other such demonstrations called for political reform and border opening. And the checkpoints between the two German states were opened on 9 November of that year, and people could once again travel freely. The 'fall' of the Berlin Wall marked that date.

Furthermore, democratic elections opened the path to the DDR's people. In August 1990, the unification agreement was reached and Germany was made official on 3 October 1990, the leaders of the two countries. The agreement was signed.

Two prominent signals of the partition of Germany and of Germany's unification in 1990 are the Berlin Wall and Brandenburg Gate. Pictures of these are shown throughout Germany on German Unity Day. The day takes place in the Brandenburg Tor and on the Reichstag around Platz der Republic as a three-day festival.

Why German Unity Day is Significant:

  • It should be celebrated because Germany was established as a federal country following years of the division since 1945.
  • It marks the day when East Germany and West Germany collapsed into a communist wall. Five days later, about 50,000 people met in East Berlin in a major demonstration.
  • The date indicates the disintegration and the day it joined the Federal Republic of Germany of the German region controlled by the Soviet Union.
