International
Day of Peace celebrated annually on September 21 is dedicated to promoting the
ideals of peace, within and between all nations and peoples. This day marks the
opening day of the annual sessions of the General Assembly. The purpose of the
day was and still is to promote the ideals of peace throughout the world.
Peace
is possible. Most societies have lived in peace throughout history most of the
time. Today, we are less likely to die in war than our parents or grandparents.
Since the creation of the United Nations and the creation of the UN Charter,
governments are obligated not to use force against others unless they are
acting in self-defense or have been authorized by the UN Security Council to
move forward.
Life
is better in a peaceful world, and today we look to those who have been
peacemakers and peacekeepers and see what each one of us can do individually to
make the world a more peaceful place.
Traditions
The
United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Peace to
promote peace standards. The day is dedicated to monitoring the ceasefire and
non-violence 24 hours a day.
It
is more important today than ever to promote peace and an open mind to the acceptance
of all races, genders, and regions. People and organizations from all over the
world participate in activities and organize events that focus on a specific
theme for the year. Activities range from private events to public
celebrations, festivals, and concerts that send a message of peace to large
audiences.
Educational
institutes are also taking the lead, organizing art exhibitions and classes for
students to discuss how different cultures celebrate peace and learn about
conflicts and wars in history so that mistakes are not repeated. On an
individual level, people participate in activities such as planting trees or
releasing animals into cages, where every little action helps spread the
message of peace and love.
Importance of International Day of Peace
1. It
connects us to each other
Nations
and societies around the world struggle with poverty, disease, education, and
health care. The International Day of Peace reminds us that no matter where we
come from or what language we speak, we are more alike than we are different.
2. It
reminds us that we must believe in something greater than ourselves
We
can get caught up in the daily work and family. But sometimes, it's healthy to
think about how societies and countries get out of their comfort zones. We can
have peace when we strive to see another person's perspective or, in other
words, "walk a mile into place."
3. It
shows that small actions can have a big impact
We
can all contribute peaceful culture to the world through prayer, advocacy,
education, and respect for others. If each of us did one small thing to achieve
peace, even every week, think about the global impact that would have.
