Ramadan is originated from the Arabic word, 'ar-ramada which means scorching heat and is the name for the ninth month in the Islamic calendar also spelled as Ramazan or Ramzan. During the entire month, people(Generally Muslims) observe a fast (Roza). Ramadan will begin on March 22nd lasting 30 days and ending at sundown on Thursday, April 20 2023.
During Roza, one should drink or eat anything while the sun is shining. People wake up early in the morning before sunrise and have their first meal known as Sehri and they break their fast with an evening meal called Iftaar.
It is believed that around 610 A.D. it was during this period when the angel Gabriel revealed the words of the Quran to Muhammad. Fasting is done to remember and commemorate this sacred revelation.
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it.”
A series of formal acts of worship, also known as the Five Pillars of Islam, is fundamental to the lives of Muslims. The pillars include
- Shahada (a declaration of faith: “There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God”);
- Prayer (Muslims pray five times a day);
- Zakat (charitable giving);
- Fasting and
- Pilgrimage (Muslims are supposed to make a trip, or “hajj,” to The city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, at least once in a lifetime if they are physically and financially able).
The end day of the month is celebrated as Eid-ul-Fitr when people have a feast and break their fasts. Eid al-Fitr includes special prayers, meals, and exchange meant of gifts with friends and relatives.
