Who is Rabindranath Tagore?

 

Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta, which is now renamed Kolkata. He is a multi-talented person. Like he is a Bengali writer, poet, philosopher, composer, social reformer and also a painter. He is best known as a legendary writer and poet who worked for both Bengali and English Literature.

 

One of the fascinating things about him is he started writing at the age of 8, and before he turned 16, he published his first set of works. Though his family members expected him to start a career in Law, Tagore was interested in the works of renowned poets like Shakespeare, Medici and Coriolanus. Also, he was the first-ever non-European to grab the Nobel prize for Literature for his work named Gitanjali. Actually, Gitanjali was originally written in Bengali and then it was translated to English. 

 

He started/created an educational setup named Shanti Niketan, which involves practical activities. Regarding his personal life, Tagore married Mrinalini Devi at the age of 42. Also, at the age of 60, he concentrated more on drawing and painting and conducted numerous exhibitions for his works.

Well, dating back to history, Rabindranath Tagore was born Robindronath Thakur on 7th May 1861. So this is when every year, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated.

 

Rabindranath Tagore is a man who has huge respect worldwide for his work. He has contributed so much to the literature world, so to date, his work is observed and remembered. 

 

How is this day celebrated?

 

This day is widely celebrated in his birthplace, West Bengal. Also, it is noted that various events are organized in his birthplace Jorasanko Thakur Bari. 

 

Apart from this, on his anniversary, many cultural programs and events like poetry competitions, dance and dramas are held in various schools, colleges and universities.

 

Three National Anthems

 

Yes, you read the title right. We know that Rabindranath Tagore has written the Indian national anthem but did you know that he is also the author of two other national anthems other than India? Even I learned it while researching about Tagore to write this article. Tagore has written Amar SonarBangla, which is the national anthem for Bangladesh, and he wrote "Nama Nama Sri Lanka Mata" in Bengali, which is the national anthem for Sri Lanka.
