Committed to Goddess Saraswati, Basant Panchami marks the start of the Spring season in India. Devi Saraswati is the Goddess of knowledge, learning, arts, and music. Saraswati is the wife of Brahma, who made the universe. It is accepted that without Saraswati the world would be shrouded in ignorance, as she is the one who represents enlightenment. Basant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day in the Hindu month of Magha.

The most popular story related to the celebration is that of the incredible poet Kalidasa. As indicated by the story, Kalidasa was a simpleton and was fooled into marrying a princess who didn’t respect him. A downhearted Kalidasa needed to end his life but just before he could commit suicide, the goddess Saraswati appeared before him and asked him to take a dip in the river.
Kalidasa did as he was told, and rose up out the water a clever, knowledgeable and cultured person, who would eventually become a renowned poet. That is the reason why on this day, the goddess is worshipped so that she may present the gift of knowledge to her devotees.
Another story related to Vasant Panchami is that According to popular belief, the inceptions of this festival lie in the Aryan time frame. Aryans came and settled in India through Khyber Pass, crossing the Saraswati River among numerous others. Being a crude civilization, the vast majority of their development occurred along the banks of the River Saraswati. Thus, the River Saraswati started to be associated with fertility and knowledge. It is then that the day started to be celebrated.
How Vasant Panchami celebrated In India
On this day, children offer prayers to goddess Saraswati hoping to exceed in the field of studies, arts and crafts, sports, and the like. Most of the schools are closed on this day as the puja rituals include the offering of pens, pencils, and notebooks to Saraswati for blessings.
Wearing saree is a common practice that is followed on this day. Most of the schools and colleges observe this day by worshipping an idol of the goddess. After the puja is over, Prasad is offered to the students and their family members followed by a delicious meal. Kesar Halwa and Khichdi are some of the delicacies that are served on Vasant Panchami.
Students flock to their respective schools and colleges to participate in this festival. A plethora of cultural events takes place on this day. It also marks the harvest time of the mustard crop and hence there’s a special significance of the color yellow. Women dress up in yellow attire and traditional sweets that are yellow in color are served.

After the puja is over prasad is offered to the students and family member. Various kinds of delicious meals like Kesar Halwa, Kesari Rajbhog, Boondi ke laddoo, and Khichdi are some of the delicacies that are served on Vasant Panchami.
