Historical Background of the Location

Situated at Faridabad SurajKund lies in the national capital region with barely 8 km away from south Delhi. The place got its name after the ancient human-made reservoir called SurajKund. As far as its construction is concerned the credit goes to the Tomar dynasty ruler king Suraj Pal who ordered its development in the 10th century. Suraj Pal was a devotee of the sun god, so he constructed a sun temple together with the water reservoir. Owing to this reason this lake named after the sun god where Suraj means sun and Kund stands for the lake.

Moreover, the water reservoir crafted in the shape of rising sun god. That is, it has a semi-circular shape which has a steep embankment on all the sides. Important to note that spread on a large area that is its diameter amount to 130 meters. By and large, this manmade reservoir is of environmental importance.

Nowadays when the surrounding region faces water shortage, it turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Speaking about this, every year with the arrival of monsoon this reservoir gets filled with the rainwater. It ultimately serves the purpose of local citizens. No doubt it adds to the beauty of the natural surroundings of SurajKund. Especially during the monsoon, where it becomes a spot of the dancing peacock.

Some facts about the SurajKund International Mela

The first ever SurajKund Craft Mela occurred in 1987. So, by far it completed successfully 30 years. It runs straight for 15 days starting from the 1st February. This fest was an initiative to promote the country art and craft industries. Initially, only local craftsman participates in this fest.

However, its growing popularity with time more and more craftsman started linking with this fest. In fact, the fest now gained such colossal status that even the craftsman from abroad is also making their participation.

These craftsmen are from the different sphere which makes it nothing less than an art show. Speaking about this, from artists to painters to sculpture to weavers all are present here. Moreover, there are local craftsmen as well as from the rest of the country.

Of course, it is a display of diverse cultural background. The fresh woven clothes from these weavers have a dramatic pattern tinted on them. One can buy beautiful accessories which have a specimen of local artwork. There is a considerable stock of small artwork made from glass, wood, metal, iron along with some other constituents.

Believe it or not, their number in 2015 fest totaled to 160,000 included in the 1.2 million of visitors. Whoever arrives here makes sure to buy the artifacts from these craftsmen who are available at quite a low price. There is food stall serving famous Indian cuisine along with the traditional folk music and dance grabbing a lot of attention.
